Cystic - Interview
1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
Cystic and I’m from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi
2. What made you start making music?
Hip-Hop has been in my life since a young age, it was there for me during my struggles and spoke to me in a way no one could. Being a person with Cystic Fibrosis, Hip Hop gave me a voice and I love this culture and genre more than I could even describe. Struggle, passion, and challenging myself is what started me making music.
3. Who are your influences in rap?
Oh plenty, I’m a student of the game in every sense of the word. From Wu Tang, NWA, and Three Six Mafia all the way to Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J Cole. Kanye West, Nas, Jay Z, Eminem, and of course Tupac and Biggie. Some more specifically would be like Tyler The Creator, Pusha T, Mac Miller, Lil Wayne, Royce Da 5’9, Griselda, XXX, Black Thought, MF DOOM, and then maybe some like IDK, Meek Mill, King Von, Denzel Curry, the whole ASAP group. Too many to count to be honest, I just love too many people. I’m a fan first.
4. What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?
The underground is going hard right now, there’s so much talent people don’t know about. People don’t realize it but the underground is about to takeover. I definitely plan on being apart of that movement.
5. As an artist who has to compete with thousands of others for streams/plays, what makes your music worth people clicking on?
In all honesty I have a perspective on life no one else has in the game. I’ve had all the crazy stories you hear from megastars in rap but most importantly I have Cystic Fibrosis, a rare terminal illness that affects all my organs since birth. My story is unique. My bars are unique. I strive to be the whole package, I work to have a super creative production with the likes of someone like Kanye, while also being one of the illest lyricist people never heard. People always say that but when people hear me they know I mean it. I’m versatile, my content is diverse. I don’t sugar coat nothing and I tell you it like it is. I’m not trying to be no one else but myself. I wanna be the next generation’s influence in a good way. I’m trying to build not just a fanbase, but a movement.
6. You have 1 person to thank, who would it be?
As a Christian I gotta thank Jesus Christ himself. I’m not with the super organized religion world but God really has brought through some trials and I’m grateful despite this messed up life of mine.
7. What is your process for recording music ?
I usually will make or pick out the beats first. I’ll begin to map out the topic I feel I wanna work within the beat and freestyle the flow I wanna work with. Afterwords I get to writing the track and record it as soon as I can. Mix and master myself over the course of the week and then move on to the next track. I’m a huge perfectionist with album’s and project‘s cause I choose my tracklist and music choices down to a T. I don’t just make music until it’s done, my music is chosen beforehand.
8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for this year?
As for this year ending 2021. Not currently, but next year we are going to be putting out more music than ever before. You’re gonna see crazy good things from me next year and some of my best work yet. I’m excited to share it.
9. What keeps you motivated and on path towards your goals for music?
Honestly just my love for music and how passionate I am to keep going. I may be broke right now but the few loved ones I have inspire me to fight for them and make it out of this. I’m not no fly by night spitter I’m tryna get rich and make a real impact with my music. I’m not in it for trends I want this long term. I’m working towards Grammy level bodies of work.
10. What impact do you want to have on the world?
Just to keep going. Really that’s all there is to say. I don’t want a negative impact nor a positive one. Just a real impact that leaves this world with a new perspective, and to keep going in life till the wheels fall off.
11. What's your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
My favorite collaboration by far right now is gonna be with my guy Knowitall. One of the illest MC’s I know right now and one of the best out of NYC, shout out to Knowitall!
12. Who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
I make my own. Some times I admit to using other peoples tools to help create them but I’ve done all of my cover art except one. It was a cypher I was on.
13. Who makes most of your beats or production?
I make a majority of my own beats, but there’s no shame from me supporting up and coming producers and using other beats. It just depends on the vibe and if I like what you’re making. H3Music, Pendo46, Hell, ONE, Fuzhjin, and Lost Beats are some of my favorite producers I’ve work with so far.
14. What can we expect next from you in 2022?
A lot of music. I don’t wanna disclose too much cause I have a huge plan that’s bigger than us right now, but there’s gonna be a lot of music. Mixtape Cystic will be in session.
