Don Kenobi - Interview 27
1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
- Don Kenobi from Massillon, Ohio
2. What made you start making music?
- first being a huge fan of music in general. With Hip hop being my favorite genre I was always writing lyrics in high school and anytime I was with my friends we would freestyle which kinda got me started in it.
3. Who are your influences?
shit.. my biggest influence in music without a doubt is Mac Miller. Ive studied his progression as an artist so in depth over the years it really shaped my style.
4. What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?
one word that comes to mind is under appreciated. there is so many dope artists around the country that get blacklisted from these mainstream publications. The whole system is backwards foreal. I have always been about finding those artists underground on the come up and seeing their musical progress. Some I rock with more than others but the respect is there for all of them
5. What are your goals for 2019 regarding music?
my goal is to always evolve and grow. With someone like me that has a catalogue of over 100 songs I really challenge myself to one up myself with every release.
6. You have 1 person to thank who would it be?
There’s a lot of people that have supported me through the years but my girl has been there by my side the last 5 years so I would have to thank her first.
7. What is your process for recording music ?
my process has always been about efficiency. my lyrics are rehearsed/ near memorized any time I record cause not only are you saving money recording tracks quick but your able to express more emotion. Also, now that I have a studio at my house I'm a big fan of writing and recording what you wrote that day. Its hard to reciprocate the same emotion you felt when you wrote a verse.
8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for?
mann 2019 is gonna be full of vibes. Right now in January I'm already sitting on 20+ singles. I have an EP "Oblivion EP" dropping sometime in the spring along with a collab EP with my homie "Weston". we been making music together for years and always bring the best in each other. His cousin "Don Bates" and my cousin "Debs" also had a lot of influence on the project. Im real excited about that drop just because as a group we have so much individual talent its like getting an all star team getting together to play a game.
11. What are your ambitions with music is this just a hobby or is this a full blown 24/7 lifestyle your embodying?
flat out this is my life. I hate flexing but I know I can reach success in the real world. I graduated college with great grades have a dope job but non of that fuels me. I challenge myself everyday to reach success in music. I won't be satisfied with life until I do it on my terms.
12. Who is your favorite artist in the rap game right now and why?
Mac miller hands down. But I been vibing out a lot too J.I.D, Mick Jenkins, IDK, and Anderson Paak
13. what does the music you create make you feel?
Its hard to describe in a couple words but I feel like sometimes Im speaking to a generation. on some real gladiator shit I feel like i'm in the arena with the world watching me. Playing college sports, I'm use to having that competitive nature but something about making music exceeds that.
16. whats your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
Ive got to experience some dope collaborations foreal. I've got to work with Mick Jenkins, Mani Coolin, and clockwork from Cleveland. Nothing compares to the sessions with my dude Weston though. Ive spent days with that dude just locked in the studio secluded from the world and working on nothing but music. I love working with people that can match my work ethic and that dude for sure brings the best out of you.
17. who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
I got to shout out my dude Tom Van Atta. I don't even remember how I linked up with him but any dope cover art you've seen come from my music over the years has all been him. Anything thats been iffy probably came from me haha so I gotta say thank you for being apart of the process
18. who makes most of your beats or production?
first I want to say without engineers and producers us rappers would be nothing. More now than ever. My dudes Glenn Morrison, and Matt Hilbish are my primary engineers. Without them the product I put out wouldn't sound so good. When it comes to engineers I work with a bunch. Sarcastic sounds, Toucon, NJN, Mike sears, and Rob Kelly are probably my top 5 favorites over the years.
19. who is one artist you wish to work on music with and why?
Easily J.I.D.. that shit would sound crazy so if anyone reading this knows him help a homie out haha
21 do you have any upcoming shows in the next couple months?
Right now I got nothing planned I'm just really focused on my album man. I feel like by summer once this music drops, I will be pretty busy in the second half of the year.
22 for people who haven’t heard of you what sets you apart from other artists?
Honestly what sets me apart from other artists is the amount of quality I drop within a year. With me you’re going to have songs you like better sonically but the content is always on point.
23 at the end of the day what does music mean to you ?
At the end of the day this is who I am 100%. I love everything about the hustle
