Dr.Kage Beats - Interview
Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
I´m Dr. Kage - beat maker from Berlin, Germany.
What made you start making music?
I've been making music since I was a little, though nobody in my family is musical. I built drums myself as a kid and recorded my first songs, later recorded my own radio shows with buddies in primary school, then learned to play the guitar and sang in choir until I finally had my first DAW - Magix Music Maker Hip Hop Edition.
One of my talents is that I can make people feel better right away. In addition, with music, I can give free rein to my own feelings and moods. I can achieve both with my music.
Who are your influences?
Legends like Dr. Dre and Scott Storch but also young artists like CashMoneyAP or Alecto - I try to cut a slice everywhere and develop myself.
What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?
I like the fact that today, as an underground artist, you can realize yourself without being dependent on others but many are voluntarily dependent on the mainstream. I would like to hear more originality and wildness from the underground.
What are your goals for 2019 regarding music?
I've achieved most of my goals - I've realized my own website this year, brought out my own merch, made new collaborations with artists from Berlin to Australia and finally placed my music on Spotify & Co.
The last goal is to reach 15,000 plays on SoundCloud this year - I just need about 1,000 plays right now so please listen to my music diligently, so that I can reach the final destination for this year!
You have one person to thank who would it be?
My best buddy Carlo. Without such friendships that help you where they can you can´t achieve anything – THANK YOU BROTHER!
What is your process for recording music?
Sometimes I try to catch a certain mood, sometimes I picked up a cool vibe and try to represent it with my character.
I always start with the melodies or a sample, then I add the bass and finally the drums.
I like to work in the morning because then I have the most drive, but sometimes you need the gloom of the night.
Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting reaady for?
From now on every Friday there will be a new track. I spend a lot of time on music theory and bought new equipment to take my next steps. You will hear many new facets in upcoming projects that you probably didn´t know about me yet. Get ready!
What is your favorite part about being an artist/musician/rapper?
I can express myself and that really fulfills me in contrast to my regular job. In addition, I work a lot on myself, get to know myself better and develop myself further - it's like a small company.
What impact do you want to have on the world?
Be known as the weird person i am, be loved for what i do. I wanna be hope for the people.
What are your ambitions with music is this just a hobby or is this a full blown 24/7 lifestyle your embodying?
To Do what I got to get to where I want to get – 24/7.
Who is your favorite artist in the rap game right now and why?
I have to call the German rapper SIDO. He was the first rap artist I actively listened to against all odds. I was 11 at the time and was totally shocked and enthusiastic about the joke and the straightforward language. From then on, I was very busy with rap and hip hop became my favorite genre. He will always be my alltime favorite.
What does the music you create make you feel?
I feel save, strong and acknowledged.
Why is music so important and dear to your heart?
Because good music is honest and has something to tell and it´s understandable everywhere.
Taking this as a passion what works best with you for endeavors you may face (regarding to music)?
Music gives me the power to create things that I can do and ignore things that I can not change right now. The most important are creative ideas and solutions.
What is your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
I've never had any bad experiences with collabos. Once I met an artist and music teacher from Australia via SoundCloud. He came to Berlin for a few days and we met spontaneously and produced a track together. That was really funny and we got along very well, even though we grew up 15.000km away from each other and never saw each other before. I can only recommend everyone to go out and work with other artists - it´s exciting and you broaden your horizons.
Who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
I do everything myself so I can implement the message or vibe from the music directly and unfiltered into the cover.
Who makes most of your beats or production?
I produce all tracks myself.
Who is one artist you wish to work on music with and why?
There are so many. Until now, I was completely on my own and laboriously taught myself everything - I can still learn a lot from others.
There are a few German rappers like Capital Bra, but also many American artists from A$ap Rocky to Young Thug, whom I look up to and with whom I would like to cook something up together.
Who is one producer you wish to work with and why?
Again, I can not just decide for one, there would be, for example, CashMoney AP, DJ Yung Vamp, Sonus030, Slight and many others. I think they have cool facets I don´t have and the other way around. That's always a good basis.
Do you have any upcoming shows in the next couple months?
As a producer nothing is planned at the moment, maybe a few DJ gigs, I hope I can join the Battle of the beat makers 2020.
For people who haven´t heard of you what sets you apart from other artists?
My music makes you feel better and represents all facets of life. I try to mirror the mood of the times without making pop music.
At the end of th day what does music mean to you?
Pure emotions and life compressed without the boring sides.
Any live shows or projects you got coming up?
Nothing I can talk about now, there will be an update at the beginning of the year.
Where can the people that checked out this interview find you?
On my website www.dr-kage.com, Twitter(/DrKageBerlin), Instagram(/dr.kage), SoundCloud (/dr-kage), YouTube (/OtsenB), Spotify & Co. (Dr. Kage). Please keep away that fake shit from me i need some real supporters from berlin to China who get powered by my music.
