JOSHUi - Interview

1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?

JOSHUi - I'm from the UK. A place called "Manchester" in England.

2. What made you start making music?

Always loved it. Grew up in church so was always around sound with the choirs and bands. Also grew up obsessed with the music video channels on our Sky box TV subscription. Fast forward and my older brother and sister were into music (Sister is a singer, brother is a singer, rapper and producer) and they no doubt inspired me also. Started out just messing around on Fruity Loops (Now known as FL Studio) and started writing for the fun of it when I was around 17. 28 now!

3. Who are your influences in rap?

Influences stylistically would be UK MC culture aka Grime and the likes of Skepta, Chipmunk, Wiley and Kano.

4. What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?

It's thriving as always. Underground is where the new sounds are birthed and bubble until the wave becomes so large and it crashes into the mainstream. People are doing it for the passion and the love and producing stuff that is unique and not contrived.

5. As an artist who has to compete with thousands of others for streams/plays, what makes your music worth people clicking on?

Skill as well as my message. I endeavour to understand my craft and what the people who are the best at it do and replicate that within myself to bring it forward in a unique way. The skill in my execution is one reason. I also have a unique perspective and the sound that I'm bringing now is fresh and has got a "spark" to it I feel. Sonically with regard to mix and master I make sure my music is always up there and my message is one of purpose, calling and destiny which I believe we all have and should aspire to walk in.

6. You have 1 person to thank, who would it be?

God or "Yahweh" to be specific. I could go on and on about why but I know I'm here for a reason and he gives my life meaning to keep going and to push forward and to overcome more and more.

7. What is your process for recording music ?

I'm a bedroom recorder and producer. I've got a RODE NT1-a mic with 2 JBL Speakers, a Focusrite sound card, and my 10 year old Lenovo laptop I bought with my student loan alongside FL Studio. It's about making what you have work as opposed to having loads of fancy equipment and it's working for me! I work with a friend of mine "DriftBeats" who we collaborate on the mix and master together.

8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for this year?

Yes indeed! My next single "6 FEET DEEP" is out on April 29th and I've got some more music locked and loaded throughout the year. I also have a big announcement coming up which I'm not allowed to speak on fully yet but it's going to hopefully give this message I'm bringing a much greater platform from which to shout it out from.

9. What keeps you motivated and on path towards your goals for music?

Again, the creator God aka "Yahweh". I got a message to bring and music is one of the mediums given to me by which to share it. I understand Yahweh to be my propulsion force that pushes me forward.

10. What impact do you want to have on the world?

So the message I've been hinting at previously is summarised in the title "ETRNL MNDS" which is the name of my newly launched record label. The tagline, which breaks it down further, is "For Purpose, For Calling, For Destiny". I believe that Yahweh (the creator God) gives us purpose, calls us forward and walks hand in hand with us to our God-given destinies. I believe this message is a seed I've been given to plant in the hearts and minds of people in the world and this will impact the world infinitely for the better as these people go out and do good to the creation and all that is in it.

11. What's your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?

I have a friend of mine called "ClassyD'' who is an amazing artist/producer in his own right and we've collaborated on numerous tracks (some released, a lot unreleased). One day he hit me with a beat and was like let's do something in 24 hours and I said "Bet!". Managed to turn around a track called "Let me Love you" which is a banger and was made in 24 hours and released on all streaming services - available now.

12. Who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?

I work with a graphic designer called "TozFu" who randomly reached out to me like 9 years back on Twitter when I tweeted about finding a graphic designer. We collaborate on all my cover arts and visusal/graphic media.

13. Who makes most of your beats or production?

I produce a lot of my own stuff but I have started to reach out more and work with producers who's music resonates with me such as Ay29AreYouMad, Prod.Nuclear and a couple producers I know personally such as ClassyD and Dalet.

14. What can we expect next from you in 2022?

New single "6 FEET DEEP" - April 29th. More music coming and loaded after that. ETRNL MNDS from here till forever.
