Julian - Interview 09

Tell us your name and a bit about yourself!

My name is Luis but I go by Julian since it’s my middle name. I’m twenty one years old, I’m an artist and producer, and I was born and raised in Jersey. I started producing at 15 and got pretty good at it real quick. I started writing about a year later. It took me a while to gain confidence to get on the mic, but eventually I dropped my first single “0” at 19.

What made you start making music?

Well, in high school my boys and I kind of wanted to start our own music group. Two of our boys wanted to start rapping. So David, one of my long time friends, began building his own recording studio in his basement. I started making beats for them although the first few were really trash. Then after a while I started getting real good.

Who are your influences?

There’s so many to name honestly. Because what I do is listen to a specific artist for a week straight and study them really closely. I try to analyze their rhyme scheme, flow, word play... Shit like everything. But to answer your question, I would say Biggie with his lyricism, Pac and his versatility and flow, Eminem, Ludacris with his flow and punchlines, Weezy, Ye, and Russ are definitely influences. Drake’s versatility, A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, August Alsina all influenced me. Anuel AA, Bad Bunny, and Ozuna are definitely a couple as well.

What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?

Weak. Everyone’s riding the same wave.

What are your goals for 2019 regarding music?

This year I want to drop my first mixtape. I have a couple tracks ready so far, but I want this to be perfect. It’s just the way I am.

You have 1 person to thank who would it be?

Definitely God. One hundred percent.

What is your process for recording music ?

I’m always writing. Whenever I think of a good line to use, I’ll write it down on a little hand sized notebook I carry with me, or I’ll type it into my notes. I literally have over two hundred notes on my phone with lyrics, lines, or just choruses I’ve come up with. I’m on to my fifth notebook right now too actually... Usually I write to my own beats, but sometimes I’ll go on youtube and search up beats and write to them. I have my own mic set up in my room and I’ll record everything there, then I mix and master everything myself.

Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for?

Got a couple singles on deck, after that it’s mixtape mode.

What is your favorite part about being an artist/musician/rapper?

For me, it would be the ability to speak your mind and have someone be like “hey I feel that bro, I feel you”. I want to be able to relate to all of y’all and vise versa.

What impact do you want to have on the world?

I want to be remembered for making music that touched billions of people throughout their highs and lows in life. I want people to look back at my music years from now to remind them of the days they used to live, and the nights they will never forget.

What are your ambitions with music is this just a hobby or is this a full blown 24/7 lifestyle your embodying?

This has been 24/7. I’m always writing even on the job or in class. There are no breaks whatsoever.
