Kwon - Interview
1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
I go by the name Kwon & I am from Los Angeles, California
2. What made you start making music?
the era of limewire & start of YouTube made my musical interest grow. I was like 5-8 years old at the time. Michael Jackson really did it for me but I used to listen to Fall out Boys, Kanye West, Eminem & whatever was coming on 106 & Park for real. My friends in LA made a group called IMG (Infinity Music Group) & they actually made me realize that I can rap & be like the people we thought was hard in 2012 like Joey Badass & Kendrick Lamar. I was like 10-11.
3. Who are your influences in rap?
Lucki. All my people know that he really influence me the most & how his sound is incomparable. I’ve actually been a fan of him since his first project Body High released and watched him grow over the years. His music hit home for me. Kanye West & Drake close to my heart too though. They both showed me that it’s okay to Branch out and have new approaches. They both try different things & can go against the grain.
4. What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?
I feel like it is thriving honestly. There are a whole bunch of scenes & subgenres to tap into. the ones staying authentic & honing their sound really got it.
5. As an artist who has to compete with thousands of others for streams/plays, what makes your music worth people clicking on?
I feel like my music is just a vibe. real distinctive cadences & flows I feel like my sound has a cozy feeling to it. Everything cozy.
6. You have 1 person to thank, who would it be?
My momma of course. That lady done did a lot & made a lot of sacrifices for me. Ima always be thankful she put the family inna opportunity to win.
7. What is your process for recording music ?
Lately I just been coolin living life & letting the words come to me whenever I get beats from any producers. I just sit & think about what is happening in life before approaching songs. A good conversation with a friend or reminiscing led to me making a lot of my music.
8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for this year?
As of right now im really focused on shooting Music Videos for my first full-length tape titled “Life Lessons”. I am working though & I can guarantee I got some singles coming out this summer & throughout the rest of this year.
9. What keeps you motivated and on path towards your goals for music?
my friends. They know that I love creating music so getting their approval on the songs that I make as I evolve really means the most to me. Seeing all of the people I listened to grow into what they have became now plays a part too. Joony is giving me a lot of motivation on me! I’ve always listened to him growing up in middle school, even worked with him when I started off making music. That man is going to be a star in the next couple of years & his dedication is showing me that it’s possible for me as well. I feel the same way with all the artist I listened to that was small as I grew up. Locally though, anybody out in California staying out the way making music or what they love so they can put people in better positions is what motivate me the most.
10. What impact do you want to have on the world?
I want to have an impact in my city & show em that you can make a name for yourself in Los Angeles without making the classic west coast sound. I wanna show my home what else we can do & really push a whole new sound that the whole world can vibe to.
11. What's your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
Producer wise, Ima say Healthykid & Sasmochi. I started making music with Healthykid in 2018 & without him I honestly wouldn’t have found the sound that I have today. He’s done production on every project I have released so far. I really feel like me & Sasmochi push each other to the next level with all the crazy flows and crazy atmospheric melody’s that we create. Sasmochi produced every song off our full length tape “Life Lessons” that i released at the start of June.
12. Who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
The bro @IcyIhateyou is going to be doing a lot of my artwork in the future. He did the artwork for my ep I released in February titled “Purple Hearts”. @imcnctd Did my artwork for “Life Lessons”.
13. Who makes most of your beats or production?
Healthykid, Sasmochi, Tranceforeverr, & TG.
14. What can we expect next from you in 2022?
Singles. Videos. Hopefully I can get some cyphers in the works cuz I’m into that. Just stay tuned & keep ya ears open. I’m working.
