MECCA - Interview
1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
I go by The name MECCA and I’m from Bloemfontein, South Africa .
2. What made you start making music?
I always wrote stories and poems in a notebook and one day my friends saw it and thought they were cool and suggested I try rap I was against the ideas at first because I was a little shy and insecure . Then one day I eventually just gave it a shot.
3. Who are your influences?
People like Goldlink,Isaiah Rashad,Tupac, Nas and a little of A Tribe Called Quest
4. What is your take on the underground rap scene right now?
I love it ! It’s really diverse and I think the public is slowly starting to realize that the underground is Raw and unique you can hear the difference between a mainstream artist and an underground artist, an underground artist doesn’t care they just wanna share their art with the world they just go with the vibe they not worried about if it’s going to sell or nah.
5. What are your goals for 2020 regarding music?
Film more videos , finish the mixtape and try to network more
6. You have 1 person to thank who would it be?
Myself, nobody got me the way I got myself don’t get me wrong I got friends and family but honestly I have to thank myself cause I cheer myself up I pull myself together and I keep myself motivated
7. What is your process for recording music ?
It’s really not complicated,BONI (my producer) just starts making the beat In studio and when he’s done I just start spitting it’s crazy him and I are in sync deadass takes us less than 30 minutes to record a song
8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for?
Hopefully early next year we can start releasing some singles from the mixtape. It’s really cool I’m enjoying every minute of putting it together!
9. What is your favorite part about being an artist/musician/rapper?
YOU STAND OUT! You see things in your own unique way and you get to express the way you see them and the way they make you feel and it kind of helps you understand yourself a lot better. Makes you say “Damn so that’s how I really feel” I feel like most artists have said that after recording a song or after they finish a painting or something.
10. What impact do you want to have on the world?
I want to show the only thing holding you back is your insecurities, your fear, your attitude towards yourself. I know how it feels to be shy and feel like you aren’t being heard or being too scared to be yourself because the other kids are going to judge you. So basically I want that kid who hides his paintings, poems, clothes or songs to have the confidence to take the risk and share that part of themselves with the world without any fear. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you always gotta hide the real you .
11. What are your ambitions with music is this just a hobby or is this a full blown 24/7 lifestyle your embodying?
Well it’s not a hobby that’s for sure I hope one day we’ll be able to put food on the table with it. Honestly a 9 To 5 was never in the plan , This right here is the plan and it’s going to work out. I’M GOING TO MAKE SURE IT DOES.
12. Who is your favorite artist in the rap game right now and why?
I swear I change them after every full moon or something, but right now it’s Isaiah Rashad because he’s so coool. He’s not rapping he’s deadass just vibing out and I love that ! He’s just being himself and having fun on the beat.
13. what does the music you create make you feel?
It makes me feel refreshed because it’s vibey it’s that jazz, chillhop,Soulection kind of feel so it makes me feel relaxed and refreshed it’s that music you can play at 2am while cruising on the highway ,it’s peaceful.
14. why is music so important and dear to your heart ?
Like I said it helps me understand myself a lot better I’m not a person that likes to share but when I hear a beat it just comes naturally and I’m able to figure out how I really feel about a situation
15. Taking this as a passion what works best with you for endeavors you may face (regarding to music)?
Keeping faith and keeping my head on my shoulders because it’s easy to lose yourself and it’s easy to lose hope and feel like you’re not good enough. So I constantly have to remind myself that we chose the long route for a reason
16. whats your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
Working with my friend Instinct. It was always dope working with him because we were both pretty intense artists so we brought the best out of each other always going bar for bar and always exchanging ideas and concepts .
17. who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
Different people design it for me but the dude who designs most of them is PK that’s my brother I love him to death! Dude will go above and beyond to make sure your cover is on point , I really appreciate that.
18. who makes most of your beats or production?
My brother BONI that dude is crazy! Literally always knows what I’m thinking he also puts a little pressure on me because the beat would be so perfect and I’d be so scared on some “Man I hope I don’t mess it up” but pressure makes diamonds. So yeah he makes all my beats we kind of challenge each other he challenges me to do better and to explore different flows and stuff
19. who is one artist you wish to work on music with and why?
I’m really picky when it comes to features. I don’t do features unless I feel like I have to and when I do features it’s usually with my friends because they’re all amazing but I guess if I had to pick one artist outside my circle of friends it would have to be LordKez I love her whole aesthetic she looks like she does rock music but when you listen to her music it’s so soothing and smooth I like that whole contradiction ting she got going on
20. who is one producer you wish to work with and why?
Monte Booker !!!! That dude is amazing the way he manipulates sounds no one can do it like him you KNOW when it’s a Monte beat!
21 do you have any upcoming shows in the next couple months ?
Well on the 23rd my friends and I are performing at the Cherry Festival which is pretty cool apparently it’s a pretty big event. I only heard of it a month ago .
22 for people who havent heard of you what sets you apart from other artists?
My Beat selection, the way I flow , the way I blend in with the beat . I make sure the beat and I are ONE
23 at the end of the day what does music mean to you ?
