Scilla B - Interview
1. Tell us your rap name and where are you from?
Hey, Whats up. I go by Scilla B (sill-uh) and I’m from Corpus Christi, Texas but I now live in Houston, Texas.
2. What made you start making poetry?
Ever since I was a little girl, I was always writing. It first started as scribbles and then as I got older and started reading, I would channel my own thoughts and feelings into stories. It basically shook with me ever since.
3. Who are your influences?
My influences would definitely be Alexander Pushkin. He’s a Russian poet who makes beautiful pieces.
4. What is your take on the underground art scene right now?
So, back in Corpus, poetry wasn’t really as popular and to be honest, I’m not too sure if it is still. Moving to Houston was a whole different culture change when it comes to art. There are so many branches of different artists, I feel like it’s always growing in a really cool way. My favorite thing about the underground scene for poetry is that you never know what you’re stepping into. I think a lot of people have this mindset.. or idea.. that poetry is too “raw” where people snap at the end. I mean, yeah there’s some styles like that but again, everyone is different in their performance. Plus, what does “too raw” even mean?
5. What are your goals for 2019 regarding poetry?
FOR SURE, stepping back into performing in 2020. This year I laid low and would only post online here and there. I write everyday and I’m ready to present a new image from when I last would recite my poems.
6. You have 1 person to thank who would it be?
Wow, tough one. One person to thank... hmmm. I have two older sisters who are my backbone but if I have to pick one... I’ll just give the thanks to my dog, Macy. She definitely keeps me sane.
7. What is your process for writing?
I have a few. One, i always keep a small journal on me. Sometimes I’ll see or hear something and I have to jot it down especially when I get random anxiety being out.
Next, I send it to a few close people to see what message they got. I then either post or edit it and put it back in my journal folder so I can sort through later which ones I would say out loud. I used to record myself on my phone and post it on soundcloud but now when i hear those oldies of mine, I cringe really hard. Haha.
8. Any upcoming projects or singles fans should be getting ready for?
Just that I’ll be performing now in a new city. I think i’m the only one truly ready for that. I think this mental break kind of hurt my brand. But I’m back.
9. What is your favorite part about being an artist/musician/rapper?
My favorite part about being an artist Is knowing all my personal demons and angels up front. Sometimes I feel like i’m writing a whole different language when i’m connecting with my emotions. I even think “damn, that’s really dark” or “wow, i feel pumped about this” and then i’ll get people messaging me saying they could relate and even share their personal experience with me. It makes my day.
10. What impact do you want to have on the world?
I wanna be the one who just wanted to be free and speak for the people who do too. I mean, sometimes i feel like i get caught up in life that i’ll make an imaginary world on paper when in reality life is really what you make it. There is so much dark in the world, I hope it present it in a different way. I like writing on mental health and personal vulnerabilities because it helps me get past my demons. I’m working on being free from the chaos. Hopefully you know what I mean. Haha, I just wanna continue to write real shit.
11. What are your ambitions with music is this just a hobby or is this a full blown 24/7 lifestyle your embodying?
My ambitions with poetry is to publish a book. Which is also in the works - and by works I mean, I’m still doing research on it. I hope to do this 24/7 for my lifestyle. I mean, I will someday.
12. Who is your favorite artist in the rap game right now and why?
Ugh.. SO MANY. Have you listened to Hotel Diablo by MGK? It’s like Rap and rock and roll. He’s on my list.
13. what does the poetry you create make you feel?
The poetry I create makes me feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest. It also makes me feel like a I opened doors for myself when it comes to feeling things. I’m a major empath and I love self reflection. When I write, I just feel better.
14. why is music so important and dear to your heart ?
Music is important to me because it’s saved me so many times. Especially when a song drops and the lyrics are totally relatable, it sparks me. Music inspires my poetry and i believe poetry is music.
15. Taking this as a passion what works best with you for endeavors you may face (regarding to music)?
16. whats your best collaboration experience with another artist or producer?
17. who does all of your cover art or do you make your own?
i only have one “cover art” and it’s my twitter AVI. my friend, AJ, drew it. he’s like my little brother and i was so excited when i found out he was drawing. i was like DUDE I support you! haha.
18. who makes most of your beats or production?
19. who is one artist you wish to work on music with and why?
So many, I love Clairo, Billie Eilish, MGK, Jhené Aiko, Noah Cyrus. More will come to my head after this interview and I already know I’m gonna be like “damn, i should’ve said this person too” haha
20. who is one producer you wish to work with and why?
21 do you have any upcoming shows in the next couple months ?
Not yet. I’ll have to check poetry spots when the time gets closer after the new year.
22 for people who havent heard of you what sets you apart from other artists?
that’s a really good question, actually. i’ve thought about this on my own so any times. i guess the authenticity i have within myself. i like putting things into perspective that a lot of people seem to really like and relate to. i don’t really have an in-depth answer to this though.
23 at the end of the day what does writing mean to you ?
it means literally everything to me. its my love and my fear. i can’t ever imagine NOT writing.
24. Any live shows or projects you got coming up?
